MEDIA ADVISORY – Sent on of behalf of NZ Muslim Association and The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ)
Media are invited to gather at the Ponsonby Mosque (17 Vermont St, Ponsonby) at 4.30pm today for interviews with the President of the NZ Muslim Association Ikhlaq Kashkari.
These interviews will precede the welcoming of the community into the Ponsonby mosque, and three other mosques across Auckland, to remember those whose lives were lost in Christchurch.
The formal events at all four mosques across Auckland (Ponsonby, Glenfield, Ranui and Pakuranga) will begin at 5pm with a prayer and will be followed by a range of speeches from a number of inter-faith religious and civic leaders. The formal event will conclude at 6.30pm, but the full evening of prayer and remembrance will continue until 8pm for those who wish to stay.
The mosques want to welcome the entire community to join together with them on Friday night. As this is a time for everyone to stand together, some usual protocols have been relaxed slightly. However, we ask that people remove their shoes before entering the mosques and please dress modestly. If people would like to wear scarves this is welcomed, but not essential. We also respect that people may not wish to stay for the entire evening, but respectfully ask that if they do wish to leave, they do so discreetly and quietly. During prayer, the Muslim Association has said that they hope that people will stay and pay tribute with them.
Due to the expected number of visitors, we recommend making travel arrangements in advance and leaving early as we expect that streets around the mosque will be congested.
If you wish to interview the NZ Muslim association President Ikhlaq Kashkari, or broadcast live from the event, please contact Tracie Simpson on 021 199 0055 or email@example.com .
You are asked to register your participation in advance please so that we can manage numbers and appropriate spaces.
